especiallyasitsmellednicerandnicertheneareritcametobeingdone-thekingfoundacompletedwarfishoutfitforpoggin:mailshirt,helmet,shield,sword,belt,anddagger.
thenheinspectedeustacesswordandfoundthateustacehadputitbackinthesheathallmessyfromkillingthecalormene.hewasscoldedforthatandmadetocleanandpolishit.
allthiswhilejillwenttoandfro,sometimesstirringthepotandsometimeslookingoutenviouslyatthedonkeyandtheunicornwhowerecontentedlygrazing.howmanytimesthatmorningshewishedshecouldeatgrass!
butwhenthemealcameeveryonefeltithadbeenworthwaitingfor,andthereweresecondhelpingsallround.wheneveryonehadeatenasmuchashecould,thethreehumansandthedwarfcameandsatonthedoorstep,thefour-footedoneslaydownfacingthem,thedwarf(withpermissionbothfromjillandfromtirian)lithispipe,andthekingsaid:"now,friendpoggin,youhavemorenewsoftheenemy,belike,thanwe.tellusallyouknow.andfirst,whattaledotheytellofmyescape?”
